The Law Office of Dane E. Johnson is an Oregon law firm dedicated to protecting animals and advancing their legal rights. We represent individual clients as well as animal shelters and other nonprofit animal organizations working to help animals of all kinds.
Our animal law cases involve a wide variety of animal-related legal issues, including injuries to animals, custody disputes, veterinary malpractice, kennel and groomer negligence, dog bites and dangerous dog matters and discrimination involving service animals in housing and places of public accommodation. Animal Law is a Developing Legal Practice
Animal law is a growing field of law. People have begun to realize that they do have recourse under the law in many cases involving harm to animals.
Despite animals’ status as an important part of many families, many challenging legal obstacles to their legal status as something more than mere property remain. The easiest way to help the greatest number of animals despite their currently being considered property for legal purposes is to simply adopt a vegan lifestyle. If you are not vegan, please consider going vegan. It’s easy, it’s better for your health and for the planet, and it’s the morally right thing to do. When individual animals are hurt or killed by negligence or wrongful conduct, however, legal action may be needed to compensate for the loss.
Unlike some attorneys and law firms who practice in the field of animal law, we do not represent interests that seek to exploit animals or prevent the expansion of animal rights. The clients of our animal law practice are the human guardians of animals, but we do not accept clients whose interests conflict with those of the animals under their care or animals in general. We do not, for example, represent breeders because of the urgent need to reduce the enormous number of unwanted dogs and cats.
